Celebrity wines may sound like nothing more than a gimmick to sell wine to those who believe that a Marilyn Napa Vallley Red Wine or an Elvis Presley Blue Suede Chardonnay will somehow be a great find.
Yet celebrity-branded wines are gaining in popularity in
the U.S.
According to The Nielsen Company, celebrity-branded alcohol
beverage products - those directly associated with a famous person - are gaining
popularity in the US, and wine is leading the category, having grown steadily
in sales and category share since 2000.
In 2007, celebrity wine sales were up nearly 19% from 2006 in grocery stores and increased 8% in liquor stores.
How long before we see celebrity wines making inroads in Québec? The market is known for its high per capita consumption of wine and its deep pool of local and not-so-local celebrities.
