Only one in three Americans is able to correctly locate three Canadian provinces on a map (Quebec, Ontario and BC).
Some are surprised that one in three is high, including the
folks at Ipsos Reid who conducted the survey online last June. They say it’s
possible that some respondents researched some of the questions via Google
before answering…
Should we be surprised at these findings when so many Americans know Canada mainly as that mass of cold air on the weather map?
What we should be surprised about is the limited knowledge Canadians have of their own country.
According to another Ipsos Reid poll conducted for the Dominion Institute in 2007, 60% of Canadians didn’t have the knowledge required to pass a test similar to the one issued to immigrants applying for Canadian citizenship.
When asked to correctly identify the number of Canadian provinces and territories, only 32% of Canadians gave the right answer. And in Quebec, only 15% were able to answer correctly.
