The Bloody Caesar is celebrating its 40th
anniversary. The spicy drink was created in 1969 by bartender Walter Chell at
the Calgary Inn, now the Westin Hotel.
The CBC claims it is the “nation’s favourite cocktail”.
We could not find data on the drink’s consumption among Canadians but we took a look at Quebeckers’ consumption of its key ingredients.
The classic recipe: Rim a glass using lime & celery salt. Fill glass 1/3 with ice, add vodka, Clamato and a splash each of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco. Add a dash of celery salt and pepper, garnish with lime & celery.
According to data from PMB 2008, fewer Quebeckers than Canadians in the rest of Canada claim they drank vodka in the past 6 months (21.5% compared to 26.6%)
Quebeckers are less likely to have used Worcestershire sauce in the past six months. And they are less likely to have used hot sauce.
However, they appear to be more likely to consume tomato clam juice than Canadians in the ROC.
The CBC must be right; it is the nation’s favourite cocktail (with the usual regional differences and similarities).
